Metallurgical Grade Olivine

BOOST HOT METAL PRODUCTION
OLIFLUX is produced from olivine, a naturally occurring solid solution of forsterite (magnesium orthosilicate), Mg2SiO4 and fayalite (iron orthosilicate), Fe2SiO4. With an effective MgO content of 48% and a base to acid "V" ratio of approximately 1.2 to 1, OLIFLUX is a versatile and cost effective slag conditioner for both integrated steel-making processes and electric furnaces. OLIFLUX supplies an MgO contribution higher than other basic slag conditioning minerals, including natural and calcined limestone, dolomite and serpentine. Dependant upon slag chemistry, OLIFLUX can be employed as a full or partial replacement.

OLIFLUX is added as a 0 x 4 mm sand component of the sinter feed or as a 10 X 40 mm aggregate to condition blast furnace slag in integrated mills. As a sinter furnace additive, olivine strengthens the iron oxide sinter to reduce swelling and breakdown, and provides MgO for subsequent blast furnace processes. OLIFLUX promotes the development of desired slag viscosities and improves iron desulphurization. OLIFLUX can also be pre-sintered with iron ore to produce an olivine-containing pellet for introduction directly into the blast furnace. Its high MgO content works to catalyze the reduction of iron oxide and to keep alkali impurities volatilized for removal to enhance efficient production and uniform operation.

In electric furnace applications, OLIFLUX can be employed in silicon and aluminum killed practices. 10 X 40 mm OLIFLUX is used as a partial replacement for dolimitic limestone and high calcium lime. Added directly to the foamy slag, OLIFLUX will increase basicity and serves as a sacrificial MgO source to reduce acid attack on furnace refractory linings. OLIFLUX also promotes the development of excellent artificial foamy slags with the proper viscosity and volume for efficient sulfur removal and electrode protection.
