Refractory Grade Olivine

EBT AGGREGATES
VANGUARD EBT (eccentric bottom tapping) aggregates are produced from olivine, a naturally occurring solid solution of forsterite, magnesium orthosilicate, Mg2Si04, and fayalite, iron orthosilicate, Fe2SiO4. With an effective MgO content of 48%, VANGUARD offers steel makers the refractory properties required of molten steel alloys, with a unique ability to achieve a controlled fusion sought in the EBT process.

The superior performance of VANGUARD EBT aggregates is the result of product development with electric furnace steel makers. Continuous analysis, redesign and refinement have optimally paired mineral properties with particle size distribution to maximize free opening performance. Nominally sized at 1 x 5 mm, VANGUARD granule size distribution is an engineered balance between coarse and fine-grained particles. Finer grain sizes in contact with the molten metal quickly fuse to form a reliable refractory plug. The coarser, granular particles form a dense stratum which supports the thinner, fused layer until the heat is tapped. VANGUARD high purity delivers high refractoriness to minimize sub-surface sintering below the fused layer for greater tapping efficiency and improved productivity.

VANGUARD basic pH chemistry prevents reaction with basic magnesite and magnesia carbon tap hole refractories to promote longer campaigns. Custom engineered to maximize flow and permeability, VANGUARD is used to improve free-opening performance rates in eccentric bottom tapping and similarly designed of bottom tapping electric steel making furnaces.
